Snowman, you got your ears on?
I heartily recommend Thabiti Anyabwile's book, What Is a Healthy Church Member?
One of the things rarely mentioned in Christian literature is guidance for the church member with regard to his/her role in the preaching process. Thabiti addresses that topic in a chapter entitled, "A Healthy Church Member Is an Expositional Listener."
A few highlights:
"Expositional listening is listening for the meaning of a passage of Scripture and accepting that meaning as the main idea to be grasped for our personal and corporate lives as Christians."
What Are the Benefits of Expositional Listening?
It cultivates a hunger for God's Word.
It helps us to focus on God's will and to follow Him.
It protects the gospel and our lives from corruption.
It encourages faithful pastors.
It benefits the gathered congregation.
How Can Church Members Cultivate the Habit of Expositional Listening?
Meditate on the sermon passage during your quiet time.
Invest in a good set of commentaries.
Talk and pray with friends about the sermon after church.
Listen to and act on the sermon throughout the week.
Develop the habit of addressing any questions about the text itself.
Give me a word, any word, and I show you that the root of that word is Greek.
For my pastoral colleagues who have given up and/or rusted up where their Greek is concerned, I recommend Keep Your Greek: Strategies for Busy People, by Constantine R. Campbell.
Here's a snippet for the utilitarian:
"Sometimes students ask me whether or not it is good to talk about Greek in their sermons. I usually caution against talking about it unnecessarily, though I think it is fine to do so if your hearers will really benefit. So then the inevitable question is: If Greek doesn't make it into my sermon, then what's the point? To which I will answer: If you think that way, you've missed the point. The usefulness of Greek is not so that you can tell people about what the Greek says in your sermon. The usefulness of Greek is that it will give you understanding of the text, which will shape what you do say in the sermon. It's for your preparation, and it usually remains behind the scenes. Sure, sometimes it might need to come out from behind the curtains, but generally speaking it will do its work unseen by everyone but you. But to you, the Bible teacher, Greek will make a huge difference."
A few weeks back I preached on the 4th Commandment and mentioned that "Sunday morning starts Saturday night," with the implication being an impetus to prepare for the Lord's Day/Sabbath.
Along those lines, I share the following from John Piper.
10 things you can do Saturday evening and Sunday morning in preparation for hearing the Word of God preached:
Pray that God would give you a good and honest heart. (Lk 8:15; Ezek 36:26; Jer 24:7)
Meditate on the Word of God. Read portions of your Bible with a view to stirring up hunger for God.
Purify your mind by turning away from worldly entertainment. (James 1:21)
Trust in the truth that you already have. (Jer 17:7-8)
Get a good night’s rest on Saturday night.
Forebear one another [before the service] without grumbling and criticism.
Come in a spirit of meek teachability. (James 1:21)
Be still as you enter the room and focus your mind’s attention and heart’s affection on God. (Ps 46:10)
When the worship service begins, think earnestly about what is sung and prayed and preached. (1 Cor 14:20; 2 Tim. 2:7)
Desire the truth of God’s Word more than you desire riches or food. (Ps 19:10-11; Pr 2:3-5)
No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.

York (SBTS prof) & Decker, Preaching with Bold Assurance "Expository preaching is defined not by a style nor by a particular methodology, but by the end result of explaining and applying the meaning of the text. Expository preaching is any kind of preaching that shows people the meaning of a biblical text and leads them to apply it to their lives."
Robinson, Biblical Preaching "Expository preaching is the communication of a biblical concept derived from and transmitted through a historical, grammatical, and literary study of a passage in its context which the Holy Spirit first applies to the personality and experience of the preacher, then through the preacher, applies to his hearers."

If our goal in all preaching (& teaching) is life change to the glory of God (and I can't see how it's not), then our listeners should leave knowing what the text meant in the original context, what the text means for the contemporary audience, and how the text should be applied in their little world. They should be motivated to that end through our exhortation and should be expected to do it (reliant on the Spirit, of course).
